A closer look at NewGen’s work
This NewGen bathroom photo shows how the shower, vanity and tile finishes sit together in the room. Bring photos of details you like to your walkthrough so we can discuss what fits your bathroom.
- A tiled shower with a recessed niche and glass enclosure.
- A white vanity with drawer storage and dark hardware.
- Navy wall tile alongside marble-look shower tile.
Full bathroom remodeling
When the room needs more than new finishes, plan the bathroom as a whole. A full renovation can bring the shower or tub, vanity, storage, flooring and lighting into one scope.
We start with what you want to change and what can stay. Keeping a workable layout is worth considering before deciding to move fixtures or open more of the room.
Shower remodeling
NewGen accepts shower-only remodels in San Diego. You can replace the shower without committing to a renovation of the entire bathroom.
Tell us whether the priority is worn finishes, a different enclosure or a shower that is easier to use. The walkthrough helps define the work around the shower base, tile, fixtures and waterproofing, along with what can remain outside that area.
Tub-to-shower conversions
If the bathtub goes unused, we offer tub-to-shower conversions as a standalone project. A conversion gives you a shower in place of the tub, with the details planned around the existing room.
The drain location, available floor space and entry height all need attention. Bring up any mobility needs during the first conversation so we can discuss the project before assuming a particular design will fit.
Small, hall and primary bathrooms
A small bathroom remodel starts with the things that make the room difficult to use: limited storage, a crowded vanity or doors that compete for space. A primary bathroom may need a different balance of shower space, counter space and storage.
Describe how you use the room and who shares it. That gives the walkthrough a useful starting point, whether you want a focused update or a full renovation.
What belongs in your bathroom remodel scope?
A bathroom renovation can involve several trades in a small space. Use these items to describe the project you have in mind. The final scope determines what is included in your estimate; this is not a fixed package.
- Shower or bathtub: what stays, what is replaced and how the new space will be used.
- Tile and flooring: the surfaces being replaced, layout and finish selections.
- Vanity and storage: cabinet size, countertop, sink and usable storage.
- Plumbing: existing fixture locations and any proposed changes.
- Lighting and ventilation: what the room needs alongside the visible finishes.
- Demolition and finishing: the areas opened, surfaces restored and painting included.
From the first conversation to your estimate
Adonay’s estimate process starts with an introduction, your location and the scope of the project. The next step is an in-person walkthrough. You do not need to have every fixture picked out before getting in touch.
- Tell us about the bathroom

- Meet for a walkthrough
We meet you at the property to see the room and discuss the project in person. Estimates and consultations are free.
- Review the project bid
NewGen prices work by the project, with a flat bid for the agreed scope. Review what is included and ask about any selections or decisions still outstanding.

What affects bathroom remodeling cost in San Diego?
The cost depends on what is being replaced, whether the layout changes, the materials selected and the condition of the existing room. NewGen quotes each project after a walkthrough rather than publishing a starting price that may describe a different job.
When comparing bathroom remodeling contractors in San Diego, compare the work included in each bid. A finish update and a shower rebuilt beneath the tile can look similar in a short description while involving very different work.
Moving a shower, toilet or sink can add work to the piping and surrounding surfaces. Keeping the layout may reduce that scope, but does not establish the condition of what is already there.
A change to the enclosure is different from replacing the shower base and waterproofing. Make sure the estimate describes how much of the shower is being rebuilt.
Tile coverage, installation patterns, vanity size, fixtures and glass selections affect the work. Ask which selections are included and which still need to be decided.
A walkthrough cannot reveal everything inside a closed wall or floor. Ask how additional work will be discussed and priced if demolition uncovers a problem.
The estimate is free. Start with your priorities and review the scope before comparing totals. Read more about how NewGen approaches project estimates.
What to ask about shower waterproofing
Tile and grout are not the waterproofing system. Water management depends on the assembly beneath the finish, including the shower base and its connections to the walls and drain.
For a shower remodel, ask what is being removed, what is being kept and how the proposed waterproofing system connects at corners, openings and the drain. Testing and inspection requirements should be established for that assembly and the project. A finished photo can show tile layout; it cannot show what is behind the tile.
For background on why these layers matter, see Schluter’s explanation of tiled shower waterproofing. The specific system for your bathroom belongs in the project discussion.
Bathroom remodel permits in San Diego
Permit requirements depend on the scope and the jurisdiction for your address. Within the City of San Diego, some bathroom remodels may qualify for a no-plan building permit. “No-plan” is a permit route, not an exemption from permits.
The City also lists an exemption for replacement-in-kind plumbing fixtures when the installation does not require changes to drainage, waste, vent or water-supply piping. Keeping a fixture in the same location is not enough, by itself, to establish an exemption.
NewGen’s team includes an architect who handles plans, drawings and permit submissions. For homes elsewhere in the county, the applicable city or county requirements need to be checked for the project address.
Check the City’s no-plan building permit guidance and plumbing permit exemptions. Our San Diego remodeling permit guide explains the broader planning questions.
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
The schedule depends on the scope, material availability, permit and inspection requirements, and any conditions discovered during demolition. A shower-only remodel and a complete bathroom renovation need different plans, so NewGen does not advertise a fixed turnaround for every bathroom.
Before choosing a start date, discuss material selections, when the bathroom will be unavailable and which steps depend on inspections or installation requirements. If it is your only bathroom, say so at the first conversation. That is an important part of deciding how the work can fit your household.
Clarify the scope, outstanding selections, permit needs and availability of the items the project depends on.
Allow for the work inside the walls and floor, required inspections, waterproofing and the installation sequence for the selected materials.
Discuss remaining fixtures, glass, finishing work and any product cure times or required final inspections.
Bring the decisions that matter to you
You do not need a finished design to request an estimate. A short list of priorities is enough to start: what you want to keep, what is difficult to use and what you would most like to change.
- Is this the only bathroom available during the remodel?
- Do you want to keep the layout or move fixtures?
- Are there signs of leaks or damage to discuss?
- Does a condo or HOA have approval or work-hour requirements?
- Is the main goal a better shower, more storage or a full update?
- Are there entry-height or other mobility needs to consider?
- Do you have inspiration photos or materials in mind?
- Are there dates or household plans the project needs to work around?

Bathroom remodeling questions, answered.
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in San Diego?
NewGen prices each bathroom after an in-person walkthrough. The main cost drivers are the scope, fixture locations, shower construction, materials and existing conditions. Estimates are free, and the project is priced as a flat bid for the agreed scope. There is no published starting price or standard bathroom package.
Can you remodel just the shower?
Yes. NewGen accepts shower-only remodels as standalone projects. You do not have to renovate the rest of the bathroom to discuss a new shower. Tell us what you want to replace and what you want to keep so we can assess the scope at the walkthrough.
Do you offer tub-to-shower conversions in San Diego?
Yes. NewGen offers tub-to-shower conversions, including standalone projects. The existing room, drain location and proposed shower design determine the scope. Mention entry-height preferences or mobility needs before choosing a design so they can be discussed during the walkthrough.
Can you remodel a small bathroom?
Yes. Small and hall bathrooms are part of our bathroom remodeling service. Start with what makes the room difficult to use, such as limited storage, a crowded vanity or an outdated shower. A smaller room still needs a clear scope, especially if you want to change the layout.
Do bathroom remodels need a permit?
It depends on the work and the jurisdiction for the property. A City of San Diego no-plan permit is still a permit. Some replacement-in-kind plumbing fixtures are exempt when connected piping does not need alteration or replacement. The project must be reviewed against the applicable requirements rather than assuming that an unchanged layout needs no permits.
How long will my bathroom be out of use?
That depends on the agreed work and the construction schedule. Materials, inspections and any concealed conditions can affect the sequence. Tell us if this is your only bathroom, and discuss when it will be unavailable before agreeing to a start date. NewGen does not promise the same turnaround for every project.
Is NewGen licensed and insured, and is there a warranty?
NewGen carries California General B license #1151759, is bonded and has general liability insurance. The work comes with a one-year labor warranty. Ask about the warranty terms as you review the project scope.
What do you need to arrange a free estimate?
Start with your contact information, the property location and a description of the bathroom project. Adonay’s process is an introduction, a discussion of the location and scope, and an in-person walkthrough. Call or text (619) 354-1186, or send the contact form to get started.
